I mostly agree sceluk, except for the last sentence (or rather, with words 2 - 5).
Check list for anything in game-art, ordered by importance (if we didn't aim for at least semi-realism you could move #2 down a bit):

Makes art more interesting: Yes
Can happen in real life: Yes
It's subtle: Yes
Puts emphasis on something you want to establish (contrast between Imp/All equip): Yes

...

Should not happen in modern, well-equipped forces in real life: No

For a trained game-art eye those indents really stand out because they seem to have the exactly same spec/gloss(and diffuse) values as the not indented parts around them. And it's not like that part has anything to do with the focusing chamber or whatever there is inside the gun, it's just the outside.

Ah you mean there between the stock and the main chamber?
I guess I've been influenced from one of the testers at work too much haha.
He fixates on anything that's not 'uber realistic'.
I think I did try to tell him about those art principles in fact.
Most of your points make sense and I agree.
Still, no need for excessive amounts of dirt. Wink

P.S: Modern, well-equipped forces->even terrorists (you could argue well equipped) and rebels keep their weapons clean. the gun is your life. Wink

As long as the internal parts of the weapon are kept clean, the outside can look as filthy as you can get it. Considering most SW weapons are probably electronic rather than mechanical there would likely be less concern for things like jamming due to dirt, and any barrel obstructions would just be incinerated by the laser as it is fired.

Although it wouldn't make much sense to have the troops on the Tantive IV carrying sand and mud-caked weapons as much as it would if they were on Tatooine or Dagobah or something.
