Have been having some computer issues lately but I think all is well for now until I get my new parts. Here are the screenshots that I have been meaning to upload all last week. These are the new Snow_Loose1 and Snow_Loose2 textures that I have remade. I am having a real hard time trying to get these textures to not show a pattern when they tile but every time I fix one spot several more spots become visible. I'll spend up to an hour just to try to make a texture tile and in the end it looks like the original. Snow_Loose2 has much more visible tiling unfortunately. Here are some screenshots (also in dropbox folder):

Don't worry too much about the tiling, half the time there will be a distance texture visible instead
You know how CryEngine groudn texture's work right? Detail map for close ups and distance map for far away. I guess a slightly noisy white square will be good for a distance map.

In my short while of messing around in Cryengine 3 I didn't do very much with textures so this is new to me. I know about detail maps but where are the distance maps? I don't recall seeing those in the the material settings. I would check but I can't due to the long process of transferring my old HDD to my new SSD and setting up all that fun stuff. Neutral

Its a Samsung 840 pro 256GB Very Happy . I'm using a average HDD (seagate) to act as a data drive as the SSD is kind of small for me personally. It is amazingly fast and boots up my OS in seconds rather than minutes of my old mechanical hard drive!

Yeah I am definitely going to need more space, but I figure that out later.

I am still alive, lately have been trying out some new techniques and stuff with textures and learning more programming so I can eventually push my skill level past beginner Smile. On the topic of textures I have been messing around in photoshop and doing a lot of research to figure out any way to remove that horrendous tiling problem that I have to figure out with every texture and attempt to fix. I have been trying a new approach to my textures and instead of relying on using pictures as part of a phototexture system, I have been trying to create my own from scratch. When I create my own it seems as though the textures look a lot less realistic but lose the repeating pattern better than the phototextures. I am thinking about trying a hybrid between the two types but I will get around to that later. Anyone who has some better experience with this, what should I do??

I doubt anyone will care for my own textures but if you want to see them here is a couple that still are a work in progress. I never realized how complex snow was until I started this...

Link doesn't work.
And for the texturing, a hybrid of self-made and photos is what most of the people end up with. Usually through creating the base by hand and then overlaying photos on certain areas and possibly blending between multiple photos. I'm not very experienced with all this environment art stuff tho so don't quote me. Very Happy

Try the link again, I verified it using 2 computers and they both seem to work.

Thanks Schlechtwetterfront for the info, I think I will try and do those hybrids that you mentioned. Hope I can get some decent textures out of this Smile

Yeah, works now. Last time I only got to ImageShack's main page.
The first one looks really nice, the second and third look pixelated somehow.

Hopefully your textures will be put to use sometime soon. We have a basic terrain now, so maybe it won't be too long... Very Happy

Glad someone likes them! I can't seem to get that ice crystal look to them to make them seem real though and that would be a major factor in the realism of it. the first one is my latest one and the second and third were early prototypes. Looking at the 2nd and 3rd I see what you mean by the pixelated look and maybe I can fix that if you think that is actually worth using.

Hopefully they are of use to someone Smile! I know the demand is pretty high for snowy rock textures like on the sides of mountains and I'll start messing around with those and get something of high quality finished.

Well, I'm back again! I have been experimenting a ton with texture creation from scratch in order to teach myself more about creating better textures, and have literally went through hundreds of prototypes of snow textures. I really need some feedback from you guys if these are actually convincing as snow textures and will start to develop these further if you like them. Each one is its own separate method that I have been trying and once I can get the best looking method I'll get those snowy rock textures done (sorry about the huge delay in between things and me keep on putting those snowy rock textures off). Hope you enjoy!

Hey Ben! Great to hear you've been working hard, you've earned a virtual cookie. What a Face

I would give feedback, but I'm not expert so I'll leave that to the other guys.

EDIT: They look good, except for the fact that a couple of them are a bit too bright/blurry. I like the overall designs though.

Hmm, yeah, I noticed the blurry\pixelation on 2 and 3 rd on that link, but I guess that's outdated eh?
Don't worry too much about getting thhe crystallized look in the detail, that's what normal maps and tessellation is for. Try to get good normals and speculars though, we're gonna need those.

Hurray, virtual cookie!! I wonder cookies can have cookies (if you see what I did there Smile ). Yeah the textures are a bit outdated and the reason it is very bright is because it seems to loose most of that brightness when converted into a Crytif file and tiled in Cryengine 3. Also the blur is from the Gaussian blur I used, which I must have overused a bit too much Very Happy. If you guys like them I'll create some displacement, specular, and normal maps and upload those to megacloud when they are done. Also is there a shader in Cryengine that has that sparkling snow look?

You can do a lot with spec maps. And take a look at Forrest Snow which came with 3.4.4. There's a lot of snow things in that map.

I have a texture that I have almost finished and I think you guys will like, just got to stop rc.exe from crashing when trying to export the .tif file Smile

I'll upload as soon as I get it in game and with some good maps!

Ok this is really frustrating, the CryTiff plugin to export the textures keeps on crashing with a log message of

Code:

I have tried redownloading the Cryengine 3 SDK and reinstalling the photoshop plugin but it is not working. Just a few months ago it was working fine but Photoshop went through a couple of updates since then

The plug in works fine with Photoshop CS2 (and that's free) so maybe try that?
You can post a topic (or search if there are any similar ones) on CryDev, too.

I posted on CryDev and am still awaiting a response but in the meantime I have created several textures that only need to be ported to .tif format for Cryengine 3. I will look into Photoshop CS2 for porting the textures but I will continue to try to trouble shoot my Photoshop.

If you guys would like, I'll post some .jpg files of my new textures, I think I am getting better overall in my skills but I'll leave it to you guys to judge Very Happy
